Nutritional biotechnology expert

Dr. Kostas Mountzouris is an academic lecturer in nutritional biotechnology at the Department of Nutritional Physiology & Feeding of the Agricultural University of Athens in Greece. His teaching activities focus in animal and human nutrition, nutritional physiology, nutrient digestion and metabolism, biotechnology in nutrition and aspects related to nutrition and health at undergraduate and postgraduate level. He has acted as an invited reviewer in a number of peer review scientific journals and as an expert evaluator of research proposals submitted under the FP6 and FP7 Framework programmes of the European Commission.

His primary research interests concern:

  • the study of the effects of functional food/feed components and probiotics on target physiological functions of animals (e.g. growth, nutrient digestion, intestinal function, intestinal microflora composition and metabolites, immune system gut mucin composition and gene expression)
  • the evaluation of the efficacy of incorporating various bioactives (e.g. enzymes, peptides, organic acids, probiotics, prebiotics and phytobioitcs) into the diets of animals as alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters.

Publications:
